About FightBack

”After my serious skiing accident in 2010 I had to choose do I give up or fight my way back? I wanted to fight back. Today FightBack brand helps people suffering from head trauma. It also stands for positive thinking, persistence and not giving up on what’s the most important to you.”

FightBack’s mission is to support people with head trauma in their rehabilitation that often takes a lifetime. The goal is also to increase awareness of the safety in daily activities and especially in sport. Many accidents and serious injuries can be prevented by using helmet and other protective gear.

The founder and the face of FightBack, Pekka Hyysalo, was only 19 years old when he had a life theratening accident while freeskiing filming sessions. A heavy gust of wind grabbed him and he overshoot the landing, hit his head and fell into coma for several weeks. The helmet saved his life but he got a life threatening TBI (traumatic brain injury). He started to Fight Back to life. It also was the origin of the FightBack Brand. Already at the early stage of his survival, Pekka wanted to help other people with head traumas. Today FightBack also stands for positive thinking, persistence and not giving up on what’s the most important to you.

We, at Pure Waste, know that everything we do has an impact on something, somewhere. We know that sustainability and quality go together. We believe that fashion and ecological thinking should go together too.

The roots of our company come from the Nordic tradition of recycling, and the clean and pure environment of our native Finland. We first began experimenting with industrial leftover materials with our first-born Costo – a company that specialises in sustainable textile accessories. We were committed to make only ecological and otherwise ethical choices, and without compromises. So when we couldn’t find a fabric that was 100 % recycled, we decided to develop it ourselves.

“Pure Waste” is our promise to use only materials that would otherwise go to waste. We also wish to challenge the whole perception of waste. Pure Waste is recycling upgraded. Our vision is to recreate the fashion industry, and lead it into a future of sustainability. We want to industrialise textile upcycling globally as a common practice.

The scarab beetle in the Pure Waste logo symbolises our values. In ancient Egypt these natural recyclers represented rebirth and renewal.

For us, how we do business and how we treat people are both important. We strive to be transparent in everything we do. We want to provide fair, safe and legal working conditions for everyone who works with us.

We located our CMT factory in the Tiruppur area of southern India. It’s a building designed and built for industrial use, so we can guarantee a safe working environment. We comply with local laws and international regulations, such as the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We try to ensure that the standards are not only fulfilled, but also improved upon.

Our employees have work contracts, are on a payroll and are paid monthly. Working hours are less than the local average – 10 hours per day. Over time is paid and not compulsory. Salaries are higher than average in the region. We also cover social expenses and light food. Transportation is provided as well as accommodation, when necessary.

No under-age workers are permitted. Half of our employees are from the nearby village and the eldest of the village is also the head of the factory. To ensure our standards are fulfilled, one of the shareholders of the company is Indian. He is responsible for daily operations in India. We also personally visit the factory regularly. The commitment of the local workers helps us to function according to our values at all the levels. For us, it is important that employees are treated fairly and that we can take care of their well-being.

There may be a lot of undesirable effects for a region when producing in a developing country, but our aim has been to minimise harmful impacts and instead bring positive benefits for the village community. We not only produce water-saving textiles, but we also keep an eye on all our responsibilities.

The available resources are used as efficiently as possible to minimise harmful environmental impacts. 95 % of the energy used in the factory comes from wind power. Waste is recycled from bio -toilets for cultivation, and to produce cooking gas for our workers. The fence surrounding the factory is made of 56 000 recycled plastic bottles. The factory is located in a dry area, so water usage is regulated. There is a well, and a water pipe built to the factory that benefits people living in the area.
